In WW2 he served in the RASC, seeing service across Europe and North Africa. At the end of his life he was an Engineer Foreman with Southend County Borough Council. He married Margaret Jane Morgan at St Andrew's Westborough Road, Westcliff on Sea, Essex. He was a clever man with his hands (like his father) and was the last word in patience. One of the most enduring memories his son John has is of sitting on the floor in the top-floor flat in Crowstone Road watching his father fit the cables for the front door bell. John believes that it was at this time in his life that he first learnt his love of classical music. But things were not always tranquil. John can remember what happened when his parents discovered he'd thrown his father's foreign-coin collection out into the street.
Alfred's death was a sad occasion, attended by Margaret, John and Pamela. His final moments came in Ward B2 at Oldchurch hospital in Romford when the doctors decided to turn off the life-support. All the worse because the family thought just the day before that his health was improving.

Margaret was the seventh of ten children, beginning her life in Kentish Town in London. She tells of many happy events throughout her life - of the cats the family had as pets, and of the number of times her mother had to take the joint of meat to bed to prevent the sons of the family from sneeking down in the night to cut themselves slices. She relates a story of the time the family were poor and living in reduced circumstances in the village of Mundon in Essex. It seems that they were constantly at loggerheads with their neighbours who used to throw clumps of earth at them. She can remember how one of siblings always used to cry out: "Mum, they're clodding us!"
Margaret did a number of jobs throughout her life including shopwork with Brightwells the drapers at the bottom of Southend High Street, Hinds the jeweller, Sketchley dry-cleaners and a shoe shop in Broadway West in Leigh. During the war she was a member of the National Fire Service, being posted to Tylers Avenue Fire station in central Southend.
