There are 110 object in the Messier list. The list was compiled by a French Comet Hunter called Charles Messier. It is ironic that he is remembered for the list of things “not to be mistaken for a comet” rather than the comets themselves. I have imaged numerous of these objects. There is also the NGC and IC catalogues.
